The name \"Hickory\" is derived from the extreme durability of \u003cstrong\u003ehickory wood\u003c\/strong\u003e. Textile manufacturers advertised the densely woven twill fabric for its toughness, claiming it was \"as strong as hickory wood.\" Originally, the sturdy material was used as ticking for mattresses and pillowcases before it found its way into apparel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe trademark of railway workers: \u003c!--TgQPHd|||[[2,[null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,[351768,null,0]],[],null,1]]--\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eThe fabric gained popularity from the 1890s onwards as an unofficial uniform for \u003cstrong\u003elocomotive engineers, stokers, and railway workers\u003c\/strong\u003e.
